While I was visiting family in New York this summer my sister-in-law’s mama asked if I could take a few photos of their family. I LOVED shooting in her beautiful backyard! Unlike me she has quite the green thumb and I told her I wish I could bring her yard to Charleston and use it for family sessions all the time. The photos of these grands with their great-grandpa melt my heart!

Every once in awhile I get to be creative in a different way and photograph something other than families! I drove to what felt like the middle of nowhere, SC (My phone service dropped when I got close, ha!) and spent some time with Joy Pitner at her home. Joy is all about her family, hospitality, food, homeschooling her kiddos and Jesus. And sharing her wisdom with others! We spent some time in her garden and I learned more about chickens than I need to know! It was fun to hear their vision for their land – different projects and plans for meals outdoors with friends and family. Follow her Instagram account @joy.pitner where you’ll see some more photos from our session (and her own) paired with her content!
Book me to photograph your family, head shots or other creative things 🙂 Email me at email@example.com to get the conversation started. I can’t wait to chat with you!
I worked with the Ziesemers two years ago when we did a family beach session during their vacation. This time they traveled from Chicago to renew their vows at the church they got married in. I was honored for them to ask me to document the special day! We visited a couple other locations in town where they had previously taken photos on their wedding day – the William Aiken House (the gate) and The US Customs House (the checkered floor and columns). I just love the kiddos outfits!

Ashley was our contest winner and received hair and makeup before a head shot session with me! Rachel and Natalie are the dream team and we always enjoy working together. If you need your hair styled or make up done for an event or wedding these are your ladies! Ashley was so great to work with. We connected on our love for true crime podcasts 🙂 She is beautiful inside and out and worked it for the camera! She and her best friend Katherine have a fun Instagram account called @CharlestonUnknown. They explore Charleston and report back and on all the fun, food and fashion they discover. Check them out!
Email me at email@example.com if you’d like some head shots done or a family session!
Need hair or make up for an event, wedding, photos, etc? Visit Rachel’s site to get an up-do and contact Natalie for makeup! You will love working with them!
A couple of days ago I posted on Instagram that my business, Melissa Griffin Photography, just celebrated it’s 7th year! I really can’t put into words how much I’ve learned and how much I’ve enjoyed getting to know my clients during that time frame. These folks below included!
When I started my business that’s what I expected – that photography would be a fun way to meet new people and I would share in their joys of newborn shoots, weddings, family reunions and adoption homecomings. What I didn’t really think about was how much my heart would be invested in the lives of my families. I have photographed some families 8, 9, 10 times. And after doing it for 7 years the hard stuff comes. I don’t typically write sad posts but this year has been different. One of my clients passed away in February. I served the families of the victims of the June 2016 shooting at Emanuel AME Church by photographing the premiere for the Emanual documentary that just released. The family below was devastated early this year to find out that Mary Mitchell, the little red head on the left, has been diagnosed with MPS3A (Sanfilippo Syndrome). A rare, incurable genetic disease. This session was hard. In these moments I never have the right words but I am reminded why I do what I do. I’ve had people thank me for giving them memories and that they will cherish the photos forever. There’s truly nothing more rewarding than that.
On a side note. The way this family below has responded to the news about Mary Mitchell has been nothing short of amazing. Not that they don’t have bad, hard days but they are real and their hope is ultimately in God who is sovereign and good and loves Mary Mitchell more than they do. You can follow their story at the Instagram account @hopeforshug.
I just returned from a visit with family in New York and had to share some of our images from a trip to pick berries! Most of them are of Nora – she’s just too photogenic and I can never choose my favorites!
I’d love to photograph you and your family! Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule a session!
